Catskill Craftsmen has become the nation's leading manufacturer of ready-to-assemble domestic hardwood kitchen islands, carts, and work-centers. Catskill Craftsmen manufactured items are made from naturally self-sustaining, non-endangered North American hardwoods, primarily Northern Yellow Birch. Lumber is purchased from area sawmills, then dried, manufactured, and packaged on site. All sawdust, shavings and waste materials generated during the manufacturing process is converted into wood pellet fuel, and used to heat homes. The Big Island provides an amazing 7.5 square feet of work-top space. The cabinet doors conveniently open from both sides, making the Big Island extremely functional from either direction. A large, full extension drawer gives even more storage space for any kitchen. Locking caster wheels allow for easy mobility within the kitchen and lock-in-place for stationary use. Other features include nickel plated hardware and towel bars. Butcher block top is safe for food preparation. The top,legs,braces, drawer and doors are all made from Northestern Hardwood. The side and back panels are made from warp-resistant, hardwood veneer which allows for more precise machining and eases the assembly process. The Big Island comes with an oil finish.

I like this island a lot! My friend, who is a carpenter, put it together and said it was well designed. He was impressed. There were a few pieces of hardware missing and one of the doors had a starkly contrasting piece of light colored wood across the top that looked out of place and didn't match the rest of the unit, so we called Catskill and they sent the hardware and a new door and told us we didn't have to ship the other door back. Although I had to wait a few more days, they were quick to get the parts out us and it was well worth the wait. The customer service was excellent! Other companies should take note. There are many companies out there with good products and lousy customer service. If I know before hand that a seller's service is bad, I will purchase elsewhere. This company stands behind their product. It is beautiful and the large drawer extends all the way out, and works smoothly. The bottom stores my small appliances. I could even fit my bread machine inside. The double doors are a plus because I can get in from the other side if someone is at the sink side. I have no regrets. This was a good purchase. If you need storage and work surface, this is a good answer. I looked some smaller ones but the dimensions of the top on this unit will allow me to comfortably roll dough without going off the edge. I highly recommend this island!

We replaced an older, smaller Catskill cart with this one and it's a nice improvement for our kitchen, with more work surface, a big drawer and lots of easy access storage space underneath. The square top fits our kitchen configuration perfectly.The first shipment arrived with some damaged pieces, but Amazon replaced it.Assembly is straightforward and well-documented. Quality of the materials is good, and although Catskill doesn't use any cushioning material inside the two boxes this thing is shipped in, the only imperfections I found were where the bag of casters had dented slightly the top surface, and those steamed out pretty easily. Or you can consider it factory-distressed, at no extra charge.I recommend lightly sanding all the pieces before assembly with fine sandpaper, as all the surfaces -- especially the end grains -- will be rough to one extent or another. This doesn't take long and will yield big dividends when oiling or waxing later. I also think a smooth surface doesn't collect as much dust.We gave the old cart as a wedding present to a young couple getting married in a few weeks, which makes it a satisfying transaction all round.Update:Couple of changes made to the cart : I wanted more support for the bottom shelf so that it wouldn't bow under the weight of the stuff on it, so I drilled holes in the transverse pieces on the bottom and inserted two shelf support pins on either side.When we installed granite on the countertops I had them put a piece with the most interesting veining of the entire slab on top of the cart. It overhangs by 1.75" all around and it's the focal point of the kitchen now. Probably not what Catskill Craftsmen had in mind but we're very pleased with the result. The 30mm slab also raises the work surface up to normal counter height. People don't notice it's a cart until we point it out.

I am 3 starring this item based on two factors: a 4+ star for the product and a 2- star for the trouble of putting it together.First, the product. The island is just about the perfect size for our kitchen and looks great. I don't like the fact that only two of the four wheels lock, so the island is a little "unstable" or "moveable". But the Mrs. & I do like the finished product.The problem is getting to the finished product. I am 48 years old, college grad, and by no means a handyman. However, it did take my 16 year old son and me a total of about 3 hours to put the island together. The instructions are not always correct as to what screw to use. Four of the pre-drilled holes were not in the correct location on the drawer braces. (We simply redrilled the holes). So factor in some time and effort to put the island together. Finally, the wood is not finished on this product - or if it is, the finish is very inadequate. The wood is rough in places and I sure couldn't notice any varnish applied to the wood. I had to apply sand sealant, lightly sand the product, and then two coats of finish to the island, adding, of course, a lot more time to get the island ready for use.So, in a nutshell, a good finished product but plan on a lot of time getting it ready for use.
