Catskill Craftsmen has become the nation's leading manufacturer of ready-to-assemble domestic hardwood kitchen islands, carts, and work-centers. Catskill Craftsmen manufactured items are made from naturally self-sustaining, non-endangered North American hardwoods, primarily Northern Yellow Birch. Lumber is purchased from area sawmills, then dried, manufactured, and packaged on site. All sawdust, shavings and waste materials generated during the manufacturing process is converted into wood pellet fuel, and used to heat homes. Each of the two sized of Pie Safes feature three interior shelves, and solid wood door pulls. The top, legs, braces and doors are all made from Northeastern Hardwood. The side and back panels are warp resistant veneer, which allows for easier assembly.

3Misleading Product Description
By DrowsyShopperone
The description of this pantry states that it is made of "hardwood and hardwood veneer." When I inspected both this site and the manufacturer's website I got the impression that the pantry was constructed out of cheaper hardwood with a nicer hardwood veneer. In fact, most of this pantry is PARTICLE BOARD with a hardwood veneer. The only parts without particle board are the front, top and legs. The bottom, shelves, sides and back are all composed of particle board with hardwood veneer. When I told the seller and manufacturer that this was confusing, neither of them was willing to add the words "particle board" to their product descriptions.I needed a pantry so decided it was worthwhile to keep this one in spite of the deceptive product description. In general it looks just like its photograph and is not too difficult to put together. It seems solid and sturdy, and is attractive. In addition, the back is solid, and the doors close reasonably tightly, so it looks like it will be mouseproof. The door panels are held fast to the door frames by some weird floppy plastic inserts that tend to come loose. It's a poor design in an otherwise well-designed product. One of my door panels was cut just a bit too small, and the inserts wouldn't keep that one in at all. I had to get a replacement panel from the manufacturer. Even though I carefully explained that I needed a panel, I got a replacement door frame instead, the first time around. After correcting the error, I finally got a replacement panel that would stay in.Assembly is done with pins and screws. Unfortunately, the instructions aren't always clear enough about which pins should be used where. The confusion is exacerbated by the fact that the package includes incorrect numbers of certain types of pins. The instructions called for far more 1" pins than I had. When I pointed this out to the manufacturer, they said I could just go ahead and use 1.5" pins... but there weren't enough of those either. They sent me some extras. It should be possible to assemble the pantry without power tools - and in fact the instructions don't call for any - except for one oversight. When you attach the magnets that hold the doors shut, the instructions tell you that there should be some holes for the screws... but there aren't any holes. You have to drill them yourself. The manufacturer, Catskill Craftsmen, was quite responsive over email - which is fortunate, since I needed so many additional parts. However, they were suspiciously silent when I twice requested that, on their website description of this product, they specify that it contains particle board (they list it as a "hardwood cabinet" made of "hardwood and hardwood veneer.")I'm not sure whether I would order this again if I could do it over. It's nice, but the hassle of requesting multiple extra parts and wrestling with the assembly instructions may not have been worth it.

5Simply lovely!

The pie safe is well made and finished beautifully. I use it in my kitchen as a "snack cabinet" and to hold the extras that won't fit in my less than ample cabinet space. I could have gone with something cheaper but this really is a nice piece of furniture that adds simply elegance to my little kitchen.

4Almost perfect

Love this item. Excellent wood quality. Very heavy and sturdy. The wood is unfinished, so you will need to coat it with mineral oil(or a similar product) to protect the surface. Our ONLY complaint is the way the wood panel inserts attach to each door panel. According to the assembly instructions the panels are supposed to stay in place with ONLY the included clear plastic strips, but these failed to hold the panels in place for us at all. However, after my husband added a few tiny finishing nails(tapped in right through the clear plastic strips) to hold the panels more securely, we are good to go!A beautiful cabinet and a wonderful addition my kitchen!
