Catskill Craftsmen has become the nation's leading manufacturer of ready-to-assemble domestic hardwood kitchen islands, carts, and work-centers. Catskill Craftsmen manufactured items are made from naturally self-sustaining, non-endangered North American hardwoods, primarily Northern Yellow Birch. Lumber is purchased from area sawmills, then dried, manufactured, and packaged on site. All sawdust, shavings and waste materials generated during the manufacturing process is converted into wood pellet fuel, and used to heat homes. Classically designed and ruggedly constructed, the French Country Workcenter provides a 2.5 inch thick butcher block top, which is safe for food preparation. Additional features include heavy duty caster wheels, a large capacity drawer with full extension glides, stainless steel towel bars and slatted wooden shelves.

5Money well spent
By D. Kassoff
Six months ago we moved into a house with a pretty small kitchen that was ridiculously lacking in storage/cabinets. After researching butcher block islands as a storage and prep area solution, I decided on this one in the 20x30 size. I would have preferred the larger size, but this petite model tucks in nicely for the size of our kitchen. I have to say we've been thrilled with it ever since and continue to receive compliments. It's impressively heavy and sturdy, the wheels are top quality, the shelves provide more storage than you would imagine (currently housing our cookware on one shelf and cook books on the other) and the drawer, spanning almost the entire length of the table, holds all of our larger kitchen gadgets and tools that the regular sized drawers don't accommodate. I'm a little bitter that when we bought this it was priced a little more than $100 higher than the price it shows today, but I have to admit we're really pleased with this. Be prepared - when it's delivered the boxes are heavy and assembly takes a bit of time and patience. But this is really a great investment and I have no doubt it will last a very long time. One thing I wasn't expecting though is that the top butcher block wasn't finished, it was a rough and thirsty wood. Not a problem, but I was expecting it to arrive already oiled and ready to go.

5Well worth the money.

My parents bought me one of these Catskill Craftsmen French Country Workcenter's when I moved into my first house in July of 1999. It's been used every single day I've been home since that day. It works perfect in my kitchen, and will probably last another 20 years. The only thing you have to do to this is oil it occasionally. I use mineral oil and if I haven't done it in awhile, it can really soak it up. It works as a counter, work surface, storage and cutting board. I try not to cut bread on it with a bread knife because of the deep grooves that a bread knife can leave, but I have done it before. It just adds character to a piece that's aging very nicely. The casters are heavy duty which make it easy to maneuver around the kitchen. Two of the casters can lock in place. The drawer is about 5 inches deep and can hold a decent amount of kitchen gadgets. To my surprise, this shows very few signs of wear and aging for something that is used constantly. I've never had to tighten anything up and it's still as sturdy as the day I assembled it.I'd like to get the 48" one to use in place of my buffet in my informal dining area. The storage space beneath the top comes in very handy.

4Nice when complete, somewhat tedious assembly
By BGreg
This was delivered in two boxes, and was reasonably well packed. Wish they would use different foam for packing protection, as it left lots of little foam pieces over the wood that needed to be cleared off. There is a good pamphlet with frequently asked questions included, which is also on the Catskill web site. This took several hours to put together. The instructions are pretty clear, until the instructions neglect to tell you which screws to use to attach the top to the legs (use the small silver screws). Also, on the same step, the instructions aren't clear on which of the two drilled holes on the bottom of the butcher block top to use for each bracket (use the inner hole, not the one closest to the edge). When attaching the slide to the drawer, there are two holes pre-drilled, however, one is covered up by the bracket. Easy to put a screw through a hole in the bracket, there just won't be a pre-drilled hole there. Make sure the bracket is even on the drawer side before putting in that second screw.Recommend reading through all the instructions first, then go back and reread about the special connectors they use. Didn't need to use a hammer to get the screw/studs started, as the directions suggest. Before starting assembly, pick up a $2 bottle of mineral oil, as you'll want to use that for oiling the wood. The manufacturer, and others, sell special butcher block oil, but also say that mineral oil will work just fine. Oiling the butcher block wood with mineral oil was a good finishing touch to the project.Kudos to Amazon for having the best price, and as usual, quick shipment.
