3Good but not worth the price
By RH
I bought this because I just don't have time to build one as life is too busy. I have been working with wood for 20 years so I know my way around tools and wood and not a novice by any means. I am usually pretty happy with my purchases from Amazon, and for the most part I am happy with this product, but there are a few issues that I will address. I didn't expect high end quality in this piece and for the most part it's well built, but there are some very basic issues that should have been avoided at the factory.First. Product description says "made from asian hardwoods". I don't know what asians consider hardwood to be but I know what I expect it to be. The top is solid oak and sturdy. The wood for the base was not very hard at all. A good piece of hardwood should not be able to be picked up easily by one hand...especially by my 6 year old daughter lol.Second. Drawer slides. Went to put in the second drawer and it wouldn't close all the way...this was due to someone at the factory installing a shorter drawer slide than the rest. Instead of calling Amazon and having to wait three weeks for a part to ship from Indonesia, I decided to just run to a local hardware store and buy a set for $6.50. They are common slides so not too big of a deal just more of an inconvenience really.Third. Hinges....low quality. The hinge on the bottom of one door had a bent pin, the hole the pin slides into was too small and the hinge itself was mounted too high causing it to close on itself so the door wouldn't close all the way. Again, I have a work shop so it was an easy fix. Pulled hinge off door, ran a drill bit through the hole to widen it out just a hair, remounted hing on door and lowered hinge on cabinet just a little and all was well in the world once again.Since we are going to use this as a snack bar all the time I mounted two "L" brackets underneath to the runner rail and underside of the counter top where they are not noticable. This keeps the legs from sliding in and out. Overall I don't think it's worth the $706 I paid for it. If I would have saw it in a store I wouldn't have paid that much. I personally think it's more of a $450 cabinet. It looks good, decently built (for being mass produced), packaging was good (couple small dings) but the price is just too high. The two bottom panels that face the snack bar side are made of hardboard (the material they use for pegboard), not real wood at all. At this price I don't expect any hard board in this product. Maybe that's where the "asian hardwood" came from hahahaha. If you're gonna ask over $700 for something make sure it's worth $700 AND that you don't have to work on it to fix issues such as wrong parts being installed and bent hinges. It'll do the trick for now but I suspect within 3 years I will have to suck it up and find the time to actually build one to get the quality I'm looking for. If you are looking for something stylish and a quick fix to a kitchen then this works, but I would try and find it cheaper somewhere else.

2Broken. Improvised and repaired it ourselves.
By momoflars
I knew from the get go it would be tedious to put together...that's not so much the issue I had. Do be prepared, however, to spend hours on it (took us 9 total) and you'll need more than one person to get it done. It came in 3 big heavy boxes.Once we began the process of putting it together and got to the part of the big front face piece and big back face piece, they both had issues across the whole bottom. Starting up from the bottom of it, the part that kinda looks like a baseboard...that part was cracked all the way across on the front face piece. The back face piece was completely broken all the way across...looked like it was flapping attached by hardly anything. It looked as though it had been glued to begin with. Instead of returning it, we decided to just reinforce it and repair it ourselves. We had family coming in from out of town and needed it done. We had to purchase a really big clamp ($35), some Gorilla super glue ($6), and 2 metal brackets ($5) which ended up requiring 2 trips to Home Depot ($7 in gas money) throughout the process. The next day, we were able to move on with assembly. Once we completed assembly, one of the cabinet doors wouldn't shut. It would bang into the middle wood piece between the doors. We double checked our assembly (yes, we did follow the directions and assembled everything in the proper order). We couldn't decide if the hinges weren't set quite right or if there was a problem with the design, or what. Whatever it was, the middle wood piece between the doors wasn't securely staying in the middle. I can only describe it as "it had some sway room." The fix we went with only required 2 toothpicks. We used those as a shim between the middle piece of wood and the metal piece that holds the magnet that secures the cabinet. That worked like a charm. It's pretty to look at. Had to use black magic marker across the whole width of the flappy piece we repaired along the bottom. I really feel the price we paid was high for the what we got. We picked the lesser of 2 evils. It would've been much harder to disassemble all that we had put together already and put it back in the boxes plus the hassle of doing the return and waiting on a new one (when the new one could've still had the same design flaws), than it would to fix it ourselves. We needed an island in the kitchen for more storage and working counter space. It serves it's purpose. Thank goodness patience isn't scarce in our house.

4Looks like an expensive built-in island but it has some flaws
By SC
This was a great addition to our kitchen! When I was looking for an island, it was important that it was not on casters so that it would look like a permanent piece of furniture. It is quite a substantial, expensive looking piece. The oak trim is a little darker than I expected. It has an aged finish, with darker areas and dents. The black granite is perfect - well worth it!The packaging was incredible. 350lbs of wood and granite was well bundled in three separate boxes. It was loaded with styrofoam in every size you can think of, press-board crates, and everything was clearly labeled. The manufacturers sure knows how to ship heavy, fragile items with no issues. It wasn't fun to break all of that down, but well worth it considering.I was concerned about the assembly after reading other reviews and I have to say, it wasn't bad at all. It was as expected for a piece of furniture like this. Read directions and you'll be fine. It took my husband about two hours. There were a few times he needed me just as an extra set of hands to hold something in place while he screwed it together. Or to help put the granite top in place.I had to subtract one star because there were a few things that we were not pleased with:- The factory drilled holes in the center of the unit base were reversed (the wooden dowel pins and metal screws). We thought we must have been doing something wrong, but the holes for the right and left side of the base unit all matched up perfectly.- The drawers are very flimsy. For such a quality island, I was disappointed with how thin the wood on the sides of the drawers are.- The cabinet doors aren't 100% aligned. At first, one of the doors would hardly close. My husband played with it the best he could but it came down to the fact that the hinges were not both bent at the same angle. He tried to bend the metal slightly but was afraid to break it. Luckily he was able to adjust the hinges enough that most people would never notice.- The front panel of wood (the side with the leaf) is extremely thin. If anyone would sit in a stool and bump their feet against it (ie. a child), they could easily break it. If I had to guess, it's only 1/8inch thick.I'd also recommend buying new hardware. What's included is decent but nothing impressive. This island is an accent piece for your kitchen - buy something unique online or at your local homestore (colored glass or a bold painted pattern) and you won't be disappointed. It adds that finishing touch that makes it look like a custom island from a home magazine.Overall, I think it looks like an expensive piece of furniture and considering the price, I am satisfied with the finished product. I would recommend this to a friend.
