Catskill Craftsmen has become the nation's leading manufacturer of ready-to-assemble domestic hardwood kitchen islands, carts, and work-centers. Catskill Craftsmen manufactured items are made from naturally self-sustaining, non-endangered North American hardwoods, primarily Northern Yellow Birch. Lumber is purchased from area sawmills, then dried, manufactured, and packaged on site. All sawdust, shavings and waste materials generated during the manufacturing process is converted into wood pellet fuel, and used to heat homes. The Deep Storage Island features a solid butcher block top which is safe for food preparation. A convenient drawer and cabinet with an interior adjustable shelf offer an enormous amount of storage, not to mention the side shelves featured on both ends of the island. Locking wheels allow for mobility within the kitchen, or lock in place to provide a stationary work area. The top, legs, braces, drawer, doors and exterior shelves area all solid hardwood, while the side and back panels are warp-resistant veneer. Raised panel doors and drawer add a level of elegance to this functional island. This version also featurs a larger top with a contoured front edge.

The price for this unit from Amazon was something like $100 lesss than the price at Lowe's and Home Depot.The unit arrived as basically two boxes of boards and a pound of hardware. I am not a particularly handy fellow, and often will have to assemble, disassemble and reassemble something before it's right. I ran into two problems, both of which were rapidly and courteously addressed by Catskill Craftsmen. One of the drawings depicted the assembly of three parts of the cabinet in a manner that was not physically possible. I called and was told, to my relief, that it was the drawing that was wrong, not anything I'd done. The next problem was the absence in two panels of holes into which screws to attach the drawer glides were to be inserted. I called again and though the gentleman with whom I spoke was incredulous, they quickly provided two new panels with holes properly drilled.This is a very sturdy, handsome piece of furniture with which we are extremely happy. A couple of points about its appearance. First, the wood is very attractive; the planks are not uniform in color which makes it much more interesting than it would be otherwise and the unit is overall much lighter than it appeared in the photos on line (and to the right of this review). The color is much closer to the color of the interior drawers in the pictures.

I was dreading putting this together, alone, and somewhat crippled, but I did it. Not only did I do it, but I did it from start to finish, from sorting the parts to placing the last side shelf, in exactly 5 and a half hours. Nothing was broken, nothing was missing, and everything fit just right. It holds a lot of pots and pans and it looks very attractive. When my daughter saw it, her first comment, after trying to shake it a bit, was "Wow, this is sturdy." She's right. It seems very sturdy; no where close to flimsy, as you might worry about before receiving it. I opted not to install the casters, and I am using it against a wall, rather than as an island. In short, I am impressed. If and when I need another piece of cabinetry, or whatever, Catskill Craftsmen will be the first place I look.

The Catskill Craftsmen Deep storage island arrived three days earlier than expected. It was delivered in two boxes and very heavy. My husband and I put the unit together in approx. three hours. All the pieces were included and the directions were pretty clear in assembling unit. I do love the island. I found to my surprise that I can actually store more things in the cabinet. I'm happy with the island very much. I love the different colors of wood and the sleekness of the style. I guess the only thing now I worry about is oiling the butcher block once a month or so to prevent it from drying.
