Catskill Craftsmen has become the nation's leading manufacturer of ready-to-assemble domestic hardwood kitchen islands, carts, and work-centers. Catskill Craftsmen manufactured items are made from naturally self-sustaining, non-endangered North American hardwoods, primarily Northern Yellow Birch. Lumber is purchased from area sawmills, then dried, manufactured, and packaged on site. All sawdust, shavings and waste materials generated during the manufacturing process is converted into wood pellet fuel, and used to heat homes. This cart is a classic catskill design with butcher block top and the drop leaf almost doubles the work surface! It comes with a large drawer and a spice rack and towel bar. It has adjustable interior shelves and has nickel plated hardware. This cart is made from sustainably harvested domestic hardwood, is ready to assemble and is made in the USA.

By Casey
This product costs (at the time) nearly $1000.00 and I got it on sale for $689.00. Based on several factors which I'll explain I feel that this item should be around 400 dollars or less.First the GOOD things. For as large as this workcenter is and as much assembly is required I have to admit they really nailed all the hole alignments. Everything fit together perfectly which usually is not the case. Once together it feels sturdy and my wife enjoys using it, so it's a good product. It looks good especially after we cleaned it up and oiled it.Now for the bad. Maybe I misread the advertisement but I was under the impression that this was a solid hardwood piece, it is not. Most of this unit is hardwood veneer over some type of compressed wood or plywood, it is not solid hardwood. Also, some of the construction methods used leave a lot to be desired. For instance, the bottom of the unit simply sits on pins that are not even fastened into the wood. All of the pins in my unit fit very loose (maybe due to humidity levels I'm not sure). Also, the hardware and how it's arranged NEEDS to be thought out better by the manufacturer. Maybe instead of just throwing all the hardware in a bag they should use labeled separate bags for each type of hardware so it's not confusing. I'm used to building things and I know what screws are what but for a novice this would end up being a point of frustration. Also, several screws were missing in my kit and I had to use what I had on-hand, this should not happen. In fact more hardware than is needed should be supplied in case you drop and/or lose a screw. Also, the finish on this wood is pretty rough, rough enough that I took 600 grit sandpaper across the whole thing to smooth it out. I tried wiping it down (saw dust residue was on everything) and it was so rough that the wood was grabbing the towel and it wouldn't slide across the surface.I think what I'm getting at is that for the money paid for this item I should not have noticed these types of issues. If I had to do this over again I would either insist on paying less money for this item or I would spend a little bit more and just buy something Amish made that I know is solid hardwood and ready to go. Hope this helps.

We bought our Catskill Craftsman workcenter at least 5 years ago. We have an eat-in-kitchen with a dining area right next to the kitchen. Since we were eating in the dining area, we decided to put the cabinet in the kitchen table area. It worked great! The storage is excellent. More than you might thank - particularly in the center cabinet. I have put my large roasting pans, a blender and an air popper all in at the same time along with many other items. The butcher block top is very attractive and an inch or so thick! You can definitely use it for carving, but I just didn't want to ruin it. So I have only used it for things like rolling out pie dough. Other than that, I just keep it nice. I followed the manufacturer's instructions and only use food grade oils (mostly vegetable) to finish the surface. After 5-6 years, it still looks great and I get many compliments on the cabinet. We are currently in the midst of remodeling our kitchen when the wood that one of the casters slides into split. The workers were moving it back and forth over a lip in our new floor and it must have caused the damage. Anyway, I contacted Catskill Craftsmen and explained the situation and they are are replacing the entire side panel (which is what the casters connect to) for NO CHARGE! That's a large piece of wood! Customer service is important to me and this is a company that backs it's products and makes an effort to keep the customer satisfied.I would highly recommend this product and Catskill Craftsmen as a whole.

This is a nice piece and we love how it looks in our kitchen. My only problem with it is there was nothing in the description that told about the finish. This piece has an oil finish. This means you will have to re oil it occasionally. This is not a problem for me but it would have been nice to know beforehand so I could order some oil with it. The care instructions that came with it recommended Catskill's butcher block oil. This is what it is finished with already. I can't buy it local so I had to order it. When my island arrived the box was a little worse for wear. There were pieces rattling around inside. This was most likely UPS' fault. That is a different rant. Anyway, some of the foam sheathing that sepperated the wood pieces from the cardboard slipped away so that the wood was in direct contact with the cardboard. As a result the cardboard leached most of the oil out of these pieces. These peices were very blotchy looking and mostly unprotected. So we have a nice island sitting in our kitchen that we can't use till our oil gets here. Long story short. It is a nice piece. I would buy it again but at almost $700 it would be nice if it came with some extra oil since you will probably need it immediately. Also, you only need the butcher block oil for the counter top. It is food safe. I bought some tung oil for everything else because it is a lot more permanent.
