I'm super pleased with this workcenter. It looks really nice, it's solid and it has great storage.Most of it is solid wood and quite pretty. The large flat panels on the lower back and sides and the bottom of the open shelf are veneer over some very thin wood. It seemed kind of cheap, but actually looks nice. Every thing else is solid wood and very heavy.The assembly instructions are well written and easy to follow. I put together the back by myself. But as I said the piece is heavy and that makes it hard work to assemble. I ended up hiring a professional assembler to do it which cost $50.00.The storage is wonderful. The top shallow drawer holds 80% of my cutlery and cooking utensils, 100% of what I use every day. The bottom drawers hold my pasta pot and strainer, a small crock pot, muffin pans, cake pans, and plenty more. I keep my bowls on the open shelf, they look nice and it's great to have them so handy.I am so happy with it I just ordered the microwave cart. I'm giving 4 out of 5 stars because the butcher block top needed sanding.

I bought this because we don't have enough counter and storage space in our kitchen, and I wanted a dedicated work area for baking. The wide drawer is fantastic, and it is twice as deep as our silly 2.5 inch deep kitchen drawers. The deep bottom drawers also store a lot of items -- all my cookie sheets, muffin tins, and cooling racks fit in one drawer. I cover the wood block surface when I'm working with food that might stain. One warning: this is REALLY challenging to put together. I've assembled a LOT of furniture, and this work center took about 3 hours to put together, with my husband and I working simultaneously on it. These people could learn a lot from IKEA hardware and directions. That said, it is gorgeous and I love using it.

What a pain to assemble! There are A LOT of parts (ie - shaped, unfinished wood with a bit of oil) in the boxes, and they're not bound together inside the box, so mine had some imperfections (particularly on the veneer panels). Also, the hardware is a right pain in the rump (it uses cams, cam bolts, and set screws, and their fit is abhorrent). In the end, it isn't quite as sturdy as one might imagine.That said, it's a great piece if you can manage to cobble it together.
