By M. Davis
This cart met my expectations with its size and open & enclosed storage. The only drawback was some of the instructions which were not completely clear as to what to do. There were specialized screws & accoutrements that were baffling. Granted, the instructions did say go look at a video, but that wasn't possible at the time. Fortunately a friend was replacing my garbage disposal and he had run across this situation before and was able to help. The cart is beautiful. I love the beautiful oak grain and am enjoying my cart.

I purchased this Catskill Microwave Cart to replace an old Sauder cart of a similar design that I use in my home office for the microwave and coffeemaker. I wanted a nicer look and something more solid. This unit filled the bill in both cases. If you don't have a lot of experience with the "Sauder/O'Sullivan" kit furniture kinds of assemblies, this is probably not a project that you want to take on for your first time. This one is a bit challenging. I've put together several of these "build it yourself" units over the years so I've run into things like the hidden cams and the recessed bolt ends. If this is your first time with the stack of flat parts and the step-by-step instructions, you might want to find a friend with a little experience building kit furniture to help you out. If you had an Erector set as a kid and like puzzles, you'll be fine.It took me about 90 minutes to assemble this item. I found the instructions to be very clear and thorough. I do recommend that you read through ALL of the instructions before you begin assembly. Sometimes why you are doing a thing isn't clear until you get further into the steps. It's better to know why that clip is supposed to be slightly exposed than to find out later that you didn't do it right. Also, here's a tip that I just happened to luck into. This unit comes in two boxes. The larger of the two is labeled as "Box 1", the smaller is "Box 2". You want to open "Box 2" first. Box 2 is the open shelving unit on top that holds the microwave. It needs to be assembled first. The rest of the unit (in Box 1) is assembled upside down on top of the microwave cabinet then you flip the whole thing over when it's finished. Instructions for the top cabinet are included in Box 2, the complete instructions are in Box 1.You don't NEED a power driver to put this unit together, but I would recommend one. Doing it by hand with a screwdriver will add to your time and discomfort. Don't go buy one just for this project, but maybe borrow a power screwdriver or power driver from a friend. If you don't, you will have a sore wrist and forearm the morning after you've put this together.Get some wood glue. The small bottle of Elmers will run you two or three bucks at a home improvement store. These kinds of kits used to come with a little vial of glue. Not anymore...cost cutting, I guess. I'm the son of a carpenter so I did pick up a few tips when I was growing up. Anywhere that wood contacts wood, run a thin line of glue. You don't have to, and it doesn't say anything about it in the instructions, but I guarantee if you don't, a year from now, my cabinet is going to be a lot more stable and solid than your cabinet. If you have experience with these kits, you are really going to appreciate the quality and details in this Catskill product. Sure, it's not "fine furniture" but it's not embarrassing, either. The bottom of the drawer and the back of the door compartment are both actually wood (I've never seen this before...those pieces are usually heavy cardboard). All of the pieces are well milled and fit together nicely. All of the front and showing pieces are also actually wood, or the butcher-block assembled wood pieces and not veneered OSB (particle board). The side and back walls are OSB, but believe me, that is a big step up from cardboard. The caps covering bolt heads are also wood (instead of the usual brown or black plastic). The casters have some metal in them and seem to be sturdy enough to actually roll this thing around. The whole unit really has some heft to it. It didn't wobble when I put the microwave on the top shelf (believe me...with the Sauder unit, I always closed the microwave door very gently).I do have a couple of issues, but nothing major. The microwave shelf extends out the same distance as the "counter top" area. I would like to see the countertop come out a bit further than the top shelf. I slide my coffeemaker forward to change filters and I don't have anywhere to go with it to clear that top shelf. Not a huge deal, but it is different than my old unit and not what I was expecting. I also don't like the open back of the main area behind the countertop. It is guaranteed that you are going to have a cord hanging down from the microwave, and there is really no place to hide it. If you push something to the back of the counter area, the opening also means that it is going to fall down behind the cabinet. Yes, that would mean another large piece of flat veneer to fill in that area, but I think it would be worth it for the overall appearance and functionality of the cabinet. I'm considering getting a piece of something and doing my own custom addition.Overall I am VERY happy with this unit. It is a big step up from my previous microwave cabinet and well worth the additional cost to get the heavier, higher quality product. Now I wish that I had more people up to my office...I want to show it off!!

We have had this cart in use for about a week and I love it. The materials are good quality, and the design is ideal. As long as you can follow directions for assembly (a challenge for me, but my husband excels at this, thankfully), I am certain you will appreciate this product. You have the ability to determine which side the towel rack attaches to (it doesn't look like you can see it in the picture, but it's a nice detail), so you can customize it to fit your kitchen. Highly recommended!
