I looked and looked for a marble-topped kitchen island that didn't cost an arm and a leg. I finally found this one. It is carried by several online stores, but Amazon seemed like a good deal. The marble top is a veneer of about a half inch of gray-white marble on a counter top surface of something else. However, it is very substantial and I hope will stand up well. The size is perfect for the middle of my U-shaped kitchen. The legs and shelves are very solid. We have put a big Kitchen Aid mixer, cast iron wok and a stack of huge stoneware mixing bowls on the bottom shelf and it supports them just fine. The island is quite heavy. You should have two people to lift and assemble it - in this case, my husband and grown son. It took them about an hour to an hour and a half to put it all together.

I ordered this to go into a kitchen I was renovating. It is beautiful, functional, and provides plenty of counter surface without looking heavy thanks to the open sides. We bought wicker baskets to go into the top side racks, and now keep knives and towels in those and cutting boards in the center, so it is truly functional storage. The feet even have adjustable knobs, so if your floors are uneven, your island will not be, which is a nice touch. The marble top is the only issue. We let friends stay in the house while we were away, and came back to a chipped top. It is real marble, so any acids (think coffee, strawberries, lemons) will etch the surface if not cleaned up immediately. We even used sealer on it, and it still has marks all over it. Marble is a wonderful surface for rolling dough, kneading bread, etc., but be prepared for high maintenance.

This kitchen island is beautiful - no question. And it gives a ton of storage and work area.My issue with it is that even after tightening (and re-tightening) the bolts, it's not 100% solid, despite being nearly 200 lbs.Assembly was very easy, with just a handful of pieces and very clear instructions. They even sent a few extra bolts in the package in case one went missing in transit or during the assembly process.The finished product is impressive and looks like a fabulous store-bought piece. Just don't expect to roll out a pie crust or prep your turkey on it without some gentle rocking/jittering.
