Catskill Craftsmen has become the nation's leading manufacturer of ready-to-assemble domestic hardwood kitchen islands, carts, and work-centers. Catskill Craftsmen manufactured items are made from naturally self-sustaining, non-endangered North American hardwoods, primarily Northern Yellow Birch. Lumber is purchased from area sawmills, then dried, manufactured, and packaged on site. I will update this review after the manufacturer makes good on their promise and sends me the two pieces that were damaged in Amazon's original shipment. I thought I'd start my review now, however:1. As previously mentioned, two pieces were damaged while the package was in Amazon's control or while in transit to me via UPS. One damaged piece is one of the side panels, which has a large crack from top to bottom. The other is the towel bar, which has a significant dent in it. Unfortunately the first step in the assembly instructions involves attaching the side panels, so I haven't even been able to start assembling my cart yet despite my receiving it from Amazon 13 days ago. I didn't get around to opening the box for a day after it arrived, though I was immediately concerned about damage when the driver delivered the package because I could hear wood rattling around inside the box. Unfortunately, the manufacturer's phone line is only open Monday-Friday, so I had to wait another couple of days to report the damage. (Inside the box are two separate admonishments to NOT return the product if there are missing and/or damaged pieces but rather to call for replacements.) When I spoke with a woman at Catskill on 12/17/12 she assured me the pieces would go out that day, but according to UPS transit times the package should have been delivered on 12/24/12 if the package was shipped that day. Hopefully it will arrive today, 12/26/12, but I have no tracking number to verify the status of the shipment.2. The quality of the wood/wood veneers is okay, but not great. I assume most of Catskill's cabinets are of similar quality, and other models have reviews ranging from "the wood looks great" to "it's all fake wood/particle board." I would put my perception somewhere the middle. If you're looking for solid wood furniture, this isn't it. There is a fair amount of veneer covered particle board. I think it will look okay once assembled, no one is going to mistake this cart for a finely crafted piece of furniture. Then again, for the price it probably isn't fair to expect solid wood construction.I will update this review once the replacement pieces arrive and I can assemble the cart. It's quite disappointing, however, that as a Prime member I still don't have all of the parts to assemble this cart despite my order originally shipping over two weeks ago. I know I could have ignored the manufacturer's instructions to call them for replacement parts and simply handled and exchange with Amazon, but I definitely didn't want to have to lug a 90 pound box back to UPS and risk getting yet another shipment with damage. I do think that the manufacturer would do well to simply upgrade their packing to try to prevent such damage. There was very little inside the box other than the wood and various hardware, so it isn't surprising that things were moving around enough such that damage occurred. Seems like some additional cardboard inside the box and some foam around the hardware would cut down on damage, resulting in happier customers as well as less cost to the manufacturer in terms of sending out replacement parts.

I had been looking for a portable island or cart this size to supplement the minimal counter space in my kitchen. Items I found in stores seemed flimsy. This is much sturdier and better looking than anything else in its price range. Relatively easy to put together as long as you read through directions first and sort the parts. Only issue was the particle board back is a bit of a split near the bottom. From other reviews I'm certain that Catskill would have sent a replacement piece, but I wanted to finish it and the flaw isn't major enough to affect the integrity of the construction nothing that can't be fixed with a woodclamp and glue.
