5The perfect little kitchen island
By Just Duckie
I'm a person who does a lot of research on products that I'm looking to purchase, and in this case I looked at all kinds of kitchen islands repeatedly until I narrowed down exactly what I needed & wanted. I took a lot of measurements & compared the same products on various websites to make sure all information given is as accurate as possible. Although I wanted a lighter color island, I just kept coming back to this one. I liked that this island had solid wood exterior panels/shelf (which is adjustable), a stainless steel counter-top, & was on wheels. When the box arrived, it did have some gauges & tears but the pieces inside were perfectly fine with no scratches or nicks. All the pieces were in the box & putting it together was a piece of cake since all the holes were pre-drilled so all you have to do is match them up & put in the screw. I will say that when you first start attaching 1 of the sides to the bottom piece, it was a little frustrating at first as it would not stand up easily for me to put the screw in the hole. And extra pair of hands would have been helpful. But once you have one screw in, it was fine just as long you make sure not to tighten everything down until the side panels are standing straight up on their own & not leaning to one side or the other. Also the back panel isn't really like the bottom or side panels in thickness. It's just 2 thin pieces of wood veneer which you side into pre-cut groves in the side panels & a center wood slat also with groves. Until you put the top on, the back will look like its a little flimsy. It would have been nice if it was the same thickness as the sides but I guess that would raise the price a bit.The only issue I had was that the drawer didn't quite close flush because the pre-drilled holes were ever so slightly higher than they should have been. So I had to make new screw holes & drop the drawer not even an 1/8 of inch so it would close properly. Plus I had to make sure the metal drawer slots were even to each other on the side panels so the drawer would slide in correctly & level. That can also be a little frustrating to do; but it worked out fine for me. Also the magnet which hold the doors closed was not strong enough so I had to purchase one at Home Depot which only cost me $0.79, not a big deal. It fit perfectly in the cabinet & now the doors have a little resistance & won't pop open if you accidentally bump them or if your pet wanted to get into the cabinet (like my cat does).Once that was done, the towel holders (which I only installed on one side instead of both sides) went in perfectly along with the stainless steel top. The top also isn't a solid piece of wood with a stainless steel cover, it's just the stainless steel bent to fit around a wood frame with thin flat wood slats running length wise & glued to the steel to give the top support. However, it still quite sturdy & holds up very well even to scratches. I opted to put the wheels on which raises the cabinet to courter-top height (which is 36 inches from the floor); but you can leave the wheels off as well. Just be aware that it will drop the cabinet down about an 1 1/2-2 inches. The wheels do have a locking mechanism on 2 of them so it won't roll around. The interior shelf is adjustable & gives you the option to store somewhat tall items with no problems. The smaller shelf space is perfect for large flat sheet pans & bake ware items. A minor issue is that the bottom of the cabinet isn't completely flat as it has wood slats around the border to provide more sturdy support (I guess), so you will not be able to completely push items flush against the sides. Not a big deal for me though as there was more than enough room to put all my small appliances (blender, food processor, hand mixer, mixing bowls) in it & a few different sized baking pans. The drawer could be a little deeper (meaning from front to back of the drawer); but still works great to hold all my long spatulas/spoons (length wise) & measuring cups/spoons.With regards to the price, it really is a good price for a product that is 90% solid wood. Believe me, I checked several seller's websites during my research process & Amazon had the lowest price (but if you could find the item on sale on other websites, which then may be cheaper than Amazon but you may end up paying a higher shipping rate). I received the product sooner than I was expecting which was great. All-in-all I am very satisfied with this kitchen island; it was exactly what I wanted & needed. I even like the color (which is a little darker espresso color than what the picture shows). I love that I can wheel it out when I need a kitchen island & use it as a prep table when preparing raw meats avoiding any potential cross contamination with vegetables & other items. The since stainless steel top is also very easy to clean too. When I'm done, I just wheel it back into the empty space I have next to my built-in cabinets which extends my counter-top space even though the island is about 2 inches shorter in depth. Not a big deal though. I would recommend this product to those who are looking for a good sized sturdy kitchen island that can hold some slightly heavy/bulky appliances & still can be moved around the kitchen easily.
